    Penang boy living the dream of working on Big-budget Hollywood films

    Equator's Alumnus Lee Wei Xi aka Woei Lee, Senior Lighting Technical Director of ImageMovers Digital (IMD) is behind the scene of animated film "A Christmas Carol" by Academy Award-winning director Adrian Zemeckis.

    Woei Lee's many notable works include Fantastic Four 2, Red Cliff Part 1 & 2, Iron Man, Hellboy, AEon Flux, Sin City, The Day After Tomorrow and Superman Returns. The scene of a speeding bullet crushing against Superman's eye was his handiwork.

    Penang boy made a Gold in Beijing Olympic 2008

    Equator's Alumnus Pow Shi-Hong and his team's medal designs were selected as the Winners of the Beijing Olympic 2008's official medal designs.

    He has recently completed his Masters Degree at Central Academy of Fine Art, China. At present, he is now pursuing his passion of making a name of himself as a designer in China.
    Congratulations and you have made all Malaysians proud!

    Invitation by 2009 UWE Awards Ceremonies

    Equator's Principal Dato' Chuah Kooi Yong was honoured to be invited by the Chancellor of University of the West of England for attending the UWE Awards Ceremonies in Bristol, UK recently. They were met by the Right Honourable Baroness Elizabeth Butler-Sloss GBE - the University Chancellor (middle), Professor Paul Gough - Pro Vice Chancellor & Executive Dean and Ng Mian Har - UWE International Liaison (2nd from the left). Jason Chuah (1st on the right) was there to receive his scroll for B.A.(Hons) in Animation.

    The awards ceremonies were held on Friday, 13th November 2009 at the Grand Hall of Bristol Cathedral. They were also greeted warmly by our graduates Sabrina Tan and Yeoh Beng Hong, who are currently in their final year pursuing B.A.(Hons) in Fashion Design. Both of them were credit transfer students upon achieving their Diploma in Fashion with Equator. The staff and lecturers of Equator would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all awards achievers and all the best to both Sabrina and Beng Hong.

    Happy Days for 16 Tanjong Heritage Competition Winners

    Equator's 16 students attended the Tanjong Heritage Awards Ceremony, celebrates with their friends, lecturers and Principals. The winners goes to Liau Zhi Ying, Peh Ling Ling, Lim Pei Gee, Lim Chen Yong, Tan Ai Leng, Lim Sok Mei, Ooi Ciu Ian, Lim Che Ying and Gary Ch'ng Wei Ming in each categories. The consolation prize were Tan Boon Han, Teh Wee See, Yeoh Sze May, Lim Jia Huey, Chuah Chern Chang, Lim Soo Lin, and Ooi Lee Yee in each categories.

    The presentation ceremony held on Thursday, 22nd October 2009 at the Grand Ballroom of E&O Hotel, Penang. All the staff and lecturers of Equator would like to take this opportunity to congratulate each and everyone. Congratulations and job well done!

    Equator Students are finalists of Penang State CAT Mascot Design Competition 2009

    Graphic & Multimedia Design students Yap Zhi Qi and Lim Siang Ling are finalists amongst 234 entries in Penang CAT Mascot Design Competition 2009 organised by Penang State government. Each of them were awarded with Certificates and a cash prize of RM1,000.00 by Penang Chief Minister YB Lim Guan Eng.

    The ceremony was held at the Penang Chief Minister's conference hall, Komtar on Saturday, 24th October 2009.

    The Digital Art Competition 2009

    Equator's Graphic & Multimedia Design student Natalie Tan Jo Leen won the 1st Prize, and walked away with RM1000 cash and gifts. The Consolation prizes went to Jasmine Ong and Mak Chwei Peng in the recent held competition.

    The annual Digital Art Competition, organised by University Technology Petronas Malaysia - MEDTECH, Perak, was held on Saturday, 10th October 2009.

    Equator - Star Education Fund 2009

    Equator's students Rachel Ho and Ho Li Ying recently attended the Star Education Fund 2009 ceremony, held at Eastin Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, 30th September 2009. With them is the Star Education Fund manager, Mr. Richard Foo.

    The Art & Design Scholarship Awards 2009

    The Equator Academy of Art Scholarships and Financial Aids fund has been helping deserving students since 2000. This year the college gave out art & design scholarship and financial aid worth RM550,000 to deserving students to achieve their dreams of becoming designers.

    The awards ceremony was held at Leith Street Campus on Wednesday, 26th August 2009.

    The Fabulous MidSummer's Nite...

    Droves of people clad in their best and most glamorous floral outfits ascended upon G Hotel on Friday, 14th August 2009 to attend Equator Academy of Art Penang's Prom Night 2009 aptly titled MidSummer's NightDream.

    The successful event was organised by the Student Council of Equator, chaired by Grace S'ng where members of the council have been working relentlessly for the past few months to put the event in place. On the night itself, attendees of the event were treated to nothing but the best from performances to dances. Memorable moments from the event was probably the performances from Equator's own 'Michael Jackson', Malaysia Basketball Champ, Ballet and the crowning ceremony of the King and Queen which was won by Ken Lam and Jojo Lim respectively. On behalf of Equator, we would like to thank everyone who made this event a successful and memorable one. Thank you.

    The Chilly Art...

    Fine Art students were working hard to complete their master piece for the Nando's Art Competition nationwide. The artworks ranging from sculpture, relief art and printmaking by constructing with the used of recycle materials.

    Equator's walk away with 3 Consolation prizes which goes to Kriss (from Philippine), Lim Che Ying and Teoh Chee Wei in KL recently on Thursday, 30th July 2009.

    Contemporary Prints Exhibition by 3 students

    Equator's Fine Art students Lim Che Ying, Liew Hui Chan and Teoh Chee Wei hold their second contemporary prints exhibition recently. Their master pieces highlighted the aesthetic of our daily life and cultural impression of Penang. From the exhibition you can explore the different experimental in print-making with Lino, Wood, Metal and Screen methods in their artworks.

    The 2 weeks exhibition from 14th - 27th July 2009 at A2 Gallery, 27 Bangkok Lane, Pulau Tikus, Penang.

    Say Cheese!!!

    Equator's 1st year student Ong Ee Lynn won the 2nd Prize and Lim Pei Gee won the 3rd Prize in the Photography Competition, both walked away with their new digital camera, gifts and certificate sponsored by Nam Loong and The Star, in the recent Star organised Galaxie & Youth Carnival 2009 @ Penang Time Square on Saturday & Sunday, 11th - 12th July 2009.

    Our lucky student Mak Chwei Peng walked away with one of the Grand Prize latest LG Mobile Phone at the Spin & Win Contest. It's a super events that attract young and old, with Hip-hop dance, Basketball, Talent Search, Photography, Computer Gaming and other competition.

    UWE Chancellor Dinner

    Equator's Principal Dato' and Datin Chuah Kooi Yong attending the UWE celebratory dinner to celebrate their many years of partnership between our college and the University of the West of England.     Imagine the Big Day...

    walking down the aisle with classic centerpiece of pinkish floral design, that you started imagining what your big day would be like. Designed and produced by 1st year student Lim Jhia Rou, she walked away with RM1200 worth of prizes. 3rd prize winner Lau Lih Mei walked away with RM900 worth of prizes, and Consolation prize goes to Mervin Ng Jun Hao and Faustine Sarah.

    The contest held on Saturday, 25th April 09 at Gurney Plaza, Penang. Congratulations and job well done to each of everyone taking part in the contest.

    Equator's fashion design 2nd year student Karen Liew, was selected for this year Malaysia Official Designers Association (MODA) 2009 Designer Awards Top 12 finalist on Friday, 3rd April 2009 in Kuala Lumpur.

    New in the Family

    A warm welcomed University of Teesside, UK to be one of our International Partner Universities. Equator recently signed the articulation of agreements with the University of Teesside for BA (Hons) in Interior Architecture and Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design (Illustration, Advertising, Web & Multimedia) and Fine Art.

    Best Model built from Recyclables

    The winner goes to Fine Art student Liew Hui Chan and Consolation Philip Khor in the Mini-Logistics Modeling Competition on Sunday, 15th March 2009. The event was to create public awareness on the contribution of logistics and transportation to the growth of the economy.

    Dark Room Prints Exhibition

    Equator's 28 first year students holded a group exhibition of 31 pieces of Rayogram - Cliche-Verre Art Works, organised by Malaysian-German Society on Saturday, 7th March 2009.

    Rayogram - Cliche-Verre Art Work is a photographic images producing in dark room with the method of etching, painting and drawing that exposing with the object & light on the paper. The exhibition last for 2 weeks.

    MQA Ceremony 2008

    MQA celebrated its 1st Birthday on Thursday, 27th November 2008 at Sunway Resort, KL.

    The principal Dato' Chuah & vice Dr.Lim were invited to this occasion and receiving the MQA accreditation certificates by YB Dato' Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, from the Minister of Higher Education.

    Space is Everything... in nationwide contest

    Equator's interior students Lim Yit May and Ng Sze Wei were selected finalist with Honour Mentioned of Nippon Paint Young Designer Award 2008.

    Yit May designed the Loreal Paris with constructed structural design in steel and glass that revolutionise commercial design in different ways. Sze Wei finished with her Chinese modernism design for a tea house with pleasent atmos in naturish colours.
    The event held on Friday, 28th November 2008 at Court Yark Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.


    Islamic Fashion - Discover the Beauty of Modesty

    The Islamic Fashion Festival Sabrina Tan was named one of the 8 finalist for the year 2008 awards. She walked away with RM1000, trophy and sewing machines sponsored by Singer.
    The spectacular Islamic fashion festival held at JW Marriott Hotel, KL on Wednesday, 26th November 2008 with the Royal presence of Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah.

    Local fashion design students are the finalist in nationwide contest... MIFA 2008

    Equator's fashion design students Sabrina Tan & Yeoh Beng Hong, were selected for this year Malaysia International Fashion Awards (MIFA) 2008 top 8 finalists.
    Sabrina's theme "Headlines" is a very bold approched with red in her design. Yeoh Beng Hong in her avant-garde design that brings out the originality and styles of her own.
    The glamourous show was held at The Garden, KL on Wednesday, 26th November 2008.

    Great blends of Fashion Designer & Hair Stylist

    Equator's fashion students collaboration with Hair Icon Studio with an interesting fashion statements.

    The events organised by Penang Hairdressing & Hair Waving Association and this year theme was "Artistry of Miracle", on Tuesday, 25th November 2008 at the Grand Ballroom of G Hotel, Penang.

    Equator's Convocation 2008

    YB Professor Dr.P.Ramasamy, The Chief Minister 2 of Penang, Principal Dato' Chuah, Staff and other distinguished guests celebrated 18th Equator Convocation Ceremony with enthusiastic graduates and their family members at the Grand Ballroom of Traders Hotel, Penang.

    The Convocation was held on Sunday, 16th November 2008 with hundred of graduates from 5 disciplines in art & design field. Since its establishment in the year 1987, Equator has produced thousand of graduates and these graduates are the symbols of College's mission in quality education and cultivate to meet the nation's vision.

    "yEAAlor!!!" Graduation Showcase 2008

    "yEAAlor" Graduation Showcase 2008 was the latest offering from Equator Academy of Art Penang. The showcase was officiated by YB. Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Penang State Executive Councillor, accompanied by the academy's Chief Executive Officer/ Principal Dato' Chuah, and the academy's Vice Principal Dr. Lim.
    The exhibition of works were a compilation of graduates from 3 design departments - Graphic & Multimedia Design, Interior Design and Fashion Design. The "yEAAlor" of young talents - the creme de la creme of designers, impressed the creative world by breaking from the norm by experimenting with new and innovative ideas whilst still creating fresh visual works. The graduation showcase was held for 3 days from the 21st - 23rd October 2008 at the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society, Penang.

    "PASSPORT" Graduation Showcase 2008

    The showcase was graciously officiated by YB. Tuan Danny Law, Penang State Executive Councillor, accompanied by the academy's Chief Executive Officer/ Principal Dato' Chuah, and the academy's Vice Principal Dr. Lim. The showcase received positive and outstanding response from the industry's best and the public as it was a display of skills that the students have developed and acquired during their demanding 3 years of education at Equator.
    The exhibition of works were a compilation of graduates from 4 design departments - Graphic & Multimedia Design, Interior Design, Architectural Technology and Fashion Design. The showcase was held for 3 days from the 13th - 15th August 2008 at the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society, Penang

     



    A warm welcome from Equator!

    New Equatorians were overwhelmed by the warmth and friendliness of staff and lecturers of Equator at the recent Orientation day at Equator Academy of Art. New students were greeted by friendly faces and a helping hand weren't far away to ease the new students to their new study environment. Students were treated to presentations by Head of Departments,  alumni of Equator, as well as a welcome speech by the Principal and CEO of Equator, Dato' Chuah.
    Awards were also presented to individuals in categories such as Academic Achievement Award, Entrance Achievement Award, and Incentive Achievement Award. To end the day with a loud bang, mystery gifts were also given to 10 lucky students, much to their amazement!

    Training you to be the best!

    Equator Academy of Art Penang is proud to be the latest addition to the international toastmasters family. The Toastmasters International began in 1924 in California and has since grown to become a world leader in helping people become more competent and confident in public speaking.

    The Equator Toastmasters Club was conceived to assist and train students to be the best. The club will act as a platform where students can practice and hone their communication and leadership skills. During the weekly meetings, students will get the chance to practice and enhance their communication skills by giving prepared or impromptu speeches, and in time, be able to communicate confidently as well as being brilliant designers.

    University of Wolverhampton @ Equator

    Mr. Lester Meachem, guest lecturer from the School of Art & Design at the University of Wolverhampton recently made another visit to Equator Academy of Art Penang to conduct a workshop on 3 Dimension Surfaces. During the workshop, students were required to design and construct pop-up greeting cards as part of a 3-D experiment. Apart from the workshop, students were also treated to a Digital Illustration lecture by Mr. Meachem. Overall, students found the workshop to be "enjoyable as overseas lecturers bring forth an international input and experience".

    Mr. Meachem is the Division Leader in Visual Communication at the School of Art & Design. Representing the University of Wolverhampton, he visits Equator on a regular basis to conduct workshops and lectures. The University has been a partner university of Equator for more than 12 years where Equator graduates can successful credit transfer to the university to complete their Bachelor Honours Degree in a year mainly in Animation, Computer Graphic Design, Design, Multimedia, Interior Design and Fine Art.

     

    University of the West of England @ Equator

    Representatives from the University of the West of England (UWE) recently paid a visit to Equator Academy of Art Penang. Amongst the representatives from the university were Mr. Adrian Grandon, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Fashion Design programme - as featured in the picture, Mr. Chris Webster, Senior Lecturer in Animation and Ms. Mian Har Ng, Senior Lecturer for Graphic Design and the International Liaison and Recruitment Officer.

    With the visit, Equator students were able to attend special workshops with the experienced and talented designers, learning valuable skills and tricks of the trade to create yet more stunning and innovative designs. University of the West of England has been a partner university of Equator Academy of Art Penang for more than a decade, where Equator graduates are able to complete their BA (Hons) degree in just 1 Year under the credit transfer agreement signed between the two educational institutions.


    University of Wolverhampton @ Equator

    Professor Geoff Hurd, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of University of Wolverhampton, accompanied by representitives of the respected university recently paid a special visit to Equator Academy of Art Penang. Received by the academy's CEO and Principal Dato' Chuah, Vice Principal Dr. Lim and Director Datin Pauline Chuah, Professor Geoff Hurd was treated to a campus tour, student meet and greet session, and the warm hospitality of Equator Academy of Art. The University of Wolverhampton has been a partner university of Equator Academy of Art for more than 10years now, where Equator graduates can successfully credit transfer to the university to complete their Bachelor's Degree in 1 year mainly in the following courses: BA (Hons) in Animation, Computer Games Design, Design, Multimedia, Fine Art and Interior Design.
